Alleviating Physical Pain as a Pregnant Woman

posted by Chris Valentine

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing; it’s a sign that two people have come together and created a new life. However, as many women can tell you, being pregnant is no walk in the park.

During their pregnancy, many women feel aches and pains throughout their bodies. Not only can this be a huge hassle, but it can also add to the stress that you and your baby feel.

If you want to minimize the physical pain that you feel over the next 9 months, be sure to make use of these helpful tips and tricks.

1 – Get a Massage

Few things are more relaxing than getting a professional massage from one of your local registered massage therapists — this is particularly true if you’re pregnant.

During pregnancy, women are prone to feeling unusual pain in the following body parts:

  • Feet
  • Back
  • Legs

It’s also common for women to suffer from headaches and fatigue. Instead of relying on potentially harmful medication, you should get a massage. Going to a registered massage therapist (also referred to as an RMT), can help you deal with the physical issues mentioned above. Additionally, getting a massage can also have a positive impact on the labor outcome.

If you’re planning on booking a massage with an RMT, you should look for one that works at a multi-disciplinary clinic. This will make it easy for you to get all of the care that you need under one conveniently located roof.

2 – Get More Sleep

As your due date approaches, you’ll most likely find that sleeping becomes exceedingly difficult.

Many women have to adjust the way that they sleep due to the physical changes that their bodies undergo. This can also be caused by their rapidly changing hormones (particularly, progesterone).

If you’ve been having a hard time falling asleep, then you should try the following tips:

  • Take a hot bath
  • Drink a glass of warm milk
  • Exercise lightly through the day

If possible, try to find time for the occasional afternoon nap. This will help you recharge your physical and mental batteries.

3 – Stay Warm

Although it may sound obvious, women should try to stay warm during their pregnancy. This is because pregnant women are more likely to suffer from leg cramps when they’re cold.

To combat their leg cramps, many women will wear multiple layers, sit with a heating device and even wear socks to bed.

If you’re still finding yourself waking up in the middle of the night with leg cramps, you can relieve the pain by straightening out your legs while flexing your ankles and toes simultaneously. You can also try pushing your foot up against a wall or another strong, flat surface.

Although pregnancy is one of life’s gifts, it can be an enormous pain. If you’re tired of dealing with aches and pains or want to be prepared for the future, then you need to remember to get regular massages, get more sleep and stay as warm as possible.
