posted by Chris Valentine

There’s always a sense of nostalgia that goes along with some of our old clothes, and most of the time, it can get quite depressing when you realize that you can no longer fit into these clothes! But before you painfully decide to give them away, let’s go over a couple of methods that can prove to be more than just effective, and you may just have another shot at reliving your good old memories!

Sometimes it takes more than just a pair of scissors and a sewing kit, it also takes an open mind and a sense of creativity that helps you explore fun new styles.

1. Stay Fit

Aside from making alterations to the clothes themselves, the first step that you should aim is staying fit. If you can manage to stay in shape, then you’ll be surprised to find how pretty much all of your old clothes will still fit you perfectly. Be sure to follow a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise. But also keep this in mind, staying away from doing heavy exercise, explains Gary Preacher from HCG Diet, is essential during the second and third phase of the diet.

2. Dye

Dyeing is a great way to give a second new life to your old clothes. You can take old shirts and scarves that have lost their color, and give them a cool makeover. Get a bunch of dye colors and do a bit of research so you can discover a lot of excited methods that you can dye your clothes with. This also applies to items of clothing that are full of colors- all you need to do is bleach them and then you have a blank canvas to start over with, making the possibilities endless for brand new clothes.

3. Too Big?

You’re bound to find a whole bunch of sweaters that are way too oversized for you. Whether the size it is too big, or the sleeves are too long, there’s always something that just isn’t right. But before you throw them away, it’s good to know that there are ways for you to save the situation! If you’d like to alter the size at home, there are a lot of DIY videos on the internet that give you step by step instructions on how to fix sleeves. If you feel like you don’t have time or simply aren’t the kind of person to get into DIY activities, then give them to your nearest tailor and you’re good to go.

4. Jeans

Jeans are probably the hardest item of clothing to part with because they live with us for so long! The good news is, you probably won’t have to throw them away. If they’re much too torn up for wear, a good idea is to dye or bleach them (or both!) and then cut at the top to make yourself a cool new pair of denim shorts. There are a lot of videos on the internet that can show you how to make the distressed edges. As for your old jean jackets, don’t say goodbye just because they’ve become loose on you. There are ways to make them fit just right for you with some simple DIY stitching tricks.

5. Repurpose

Old scarves, in particular, can be a lot of fun to repurpose into perfectly fitted clothes. Grab your old scarves and there are so many ways that you can make them into cute tops; either by just wrapping around or by stitching them. You can also use them to tie up your hair or as a headband.

6. Elastic

The power of elastic is something that is so diverse when it comes to having old clothes fit perfectly again. You can utilize them to make your loose sleeves hold again, or on old dresses that have gone flimsy around the waist to give it a brand new look. If you have trousers that are no longer fitted at the top you can use them to tighten the hold and this way, have them fit your waistline just right.

Creativity is Key

At the end of the day, you’re actually going to be able to find a multitude of ways to give your old clothes life again and have them fit you in ways that are so wonderful that you will wonder why you need to spend so much money on new clothes in the first place! It’s extremely important to be creative and think of different ways to wear your old clothes. It is just as important to take care of yourself and keep your body in shape too, so that the old clothes are not too far off from your current size.
