Does Getting Dental Implants Hurt?

First, we want to make it clear that everyone’s pain tolerance is different. This means that what someone perceives as being painful another person might not. Dental implants are a complex procedure and there are times that you might be uncomfortable but not necessary in pain.

When the surgeon first puts the IV you might find discomfort especially if you have a fear of needles or you are anxious about the surgery itself. You might also feel some discomfort after the first 24 hours of your procedure once your pain medicine from the surgeon begins to wear off.

The Surgery

During the tooth implant process itself, you will be asleep which means that you will not feel any discomfort or pain. Once you wake up from the surgery your mouth will still be numb and the dentist might give you a pain medication that lasts for 24 hours.

This is called a “block” and during those 24 hours, you won’t have to worry about feeling any pain. After that wears off you will have a prescription for a strong pain killer that will help with managing your pain.

The bottom line is during the surgery and right after the surgery, you will more than likely not feel any pain.

Healing Period

During your healing period, you will feel discomfort in your mouth area around your chin, cheeks, and maybe even underneath your eyes. This is a major dental procedure after all. Your gums might also be bruised if you bruise easily and possibly your skin as well.

An icepack can help you reduce any swelling that you experience or packs of frozen vegetables if that is easier for you to get a hold of.

Make sure that you eat soft foods after your surgery for up to 14 days to make sure that you don’t cause any extra discomfort or pain where your implants were placed. You can also rinse with warm salt water to bathe and soothe your mouth.

To Get Dental Implants or Not?

Now that you know more about dental implants and we have answered your question “do dental implants hurt?” it is time to make an educated decision. With the knowledge above it should make it easier to know if dental implants are the way to go for you. Make sure that you take the time to look for an experienced surgeon because you don’t want just anyone operating in such a sensitive area.
