Weird Wagers: 5 of the Strangest Things to Bet On

posted by Chris Valentine

In 2019, the gambling market is bigger than anyone could have imagined. If you enjoy new experiences, this can only be a good thing!

For example, let’s say your usual gambling routine involves slot machines. In this case, you’d likely go to one of many online casinos. However, what if you wanted to stir it up a bit?

The easy answer would be to bet on something. That said, we’re not talking about the usual suspects like sports or politics. Here are the 5 weirdest things to bet on.

1. Ferret Bingo

Remember Paul the Octopus? If you need a refresher, this little guy got famous for predicting the outcomes of soccer matches. What you may not know is that Paul was only the brightest star in a crowded field.

One popular example of using animals for betting is the ferret bingo. The game involves placing a ferret into a cage containing seven numbered tubes. Players bet on which tube the ferret will exit from.

2. Pesapallo

Despite sounding like a type of pasta, pesapallo is a real sport. In fact, it’s the national sport of Finland. If you look hard, you may even find pesapallo-themed slots at casinos such as https://nj.unibet.com.

The easiest comparisons to pesapallo are baseball and rounders. Like them, pesapallo is a fast-moving bat-and-ball sport. Betting markets aren’t that commonplace, but some Scandinavian bookies do cover big events.

3. Wife-Carrying

Though it may not look like it, this is another sport that originated in Finland. Over there, it’s called eukonkanto. As the name implies, the husbands must carry their wives to the finish line in the fastest time.

In Finland, wife-carrying is usually considered a novelty recreation. Since 1992, the sport has its own annual World Championship, held in Sonkajarvi. As of a while ago, you can bet on it as well.

4. UFOs

For centuries, mankind has wondered whether we’re alone in the universe. The possibility is unlikely, but that hasn’t stopped Hollywood from making a profit on it. These days, bookmakers are doing the same.

That’s right: you can now bet on what year we’ll make contact with alien life. Your options stretch from this year to 2020 and beyond. You can also bet on the meeting place, with New York having the shortest odds.

5. Bog Snorkeling

This activity began life in 1976 as a result of a bar conversation in Wales. Over time, it evolved into a fully-fledged sporting event. The World Championship takes place in the Waen Rhydd bog, bringing in hundreds of competitors.

The point of bog snorkeling is to complete two lengths of peat bog in the shortest time possible. This sport is popular in the betting market as well. Some gambling firms even sponsor the main competitions.

More Weird Things to Bet On

Keep in mind that these are only some of the events you can bet on. For example, you can also bet on who will be the next Pope or when the world will end. True optimists can even bet on Elvis Presley still being alive!
